That was our second session this month – and on consecutive Sundays. We’ve gone nuts in May. The slight punk bias was offset by Graham’s set of five Bob Dylan songs in honour of Bob’s approaching 84th birthday. Quest certainly wasn’t complaining (some others were). What a fine afternoon we had at The Vinyl Whistle in Headingley on Sunday. Thanks to Neil for inviting us along to the shop to honour worldwide 45 Day (we think we did it justice) and to Loren for looking after us so well. It was great to finally make it back to the Music Library for a session now that their refurbishment is finished. We arrived for our February session as arranged – a little later than usual – to find, not unlike the world outside, the lunatics had taken over the asylum. Undeterred, with our lips sealed (see fourth set) we set about setting up for our sets of sevens. Regulars were joined in the pot by a couple of new faces and a few recently recruited soon to be regulars. An early tongue firmly in cheek “dance set” was balanced out by a heavy Led Zeppelin set and a biker themed set – before one of the newbies went from Yello to Magazine covering Beefheart. Let the eclecticism begin. We were treated to a set which spanned from a surf guitar retelling of a Japanese folk tune to Ethiopian jazz funk, in amongst the smorgasbord that followed – as Part Time Punks eyed up Betty Davis, Serge Gainsborough held us in a Melody Nelson and Augustus Pablo regaled us with his thoughts on strong coffee. Can’t wait to hear what delights our March session brings…
